About the Album

During drummer Phil Haynes’ early days in New York, he and fellow seeker Ben Monder would get together four or five times a year just to improvise. Inevitably they’d play John Coltrane’s classic “Transition.” Twenty-five years later, they appear together for the first time on record, on the aptly titled Transition(s). Naturally, they play “Transition” on the album, with Haynes’ thunderous drums opening the track before guitarist Monder comes in, pushing the proceedings into a rapturous overdrive. It’s a powerfully compelling track by two of today’s most impressive jazz masters.
