About the Album
"The Remarkable Mr. Black" is the first track off of tenor saxophonist Ernie Krivda's latest album, "Requiem for a Jazz Lady." A heartfelt love letter to his native city, its rich musical heritage, and to the replenishing quality of jazz itself, “Requiem for a Jazz Lady” is also a testament to the current vitality and resourcefulness of veteran tenor saxophonist Ernie Krivda. Consisting of six Krivda original compositions as well as one durable standard, the album showcases the leader’s ceaseless inventiveness and the unity he maintains with the members of his outstanding quartet, which includes the pianist Lafayette Carthon, the bassist Marion Hayden and the drummer Renell Gonsalves. Krivda’s calling cards--his mammoth tone and seemingly endless stream of melodic ideas--have rarely been showcased with such stirring clarity and conviction. "The music for this album was put together from a frame of reference that I would call reflective. There are six originals and a standard that are mindful of my relationship to jazz in Cleveland, Ohio (my home-town)." – Ernie Krivda
