About the Album

The Book of Ragas, scored for a jazz trio and a Sufi singer, blends Suri's South Indian upbringing and her love for the trio. She wanted to explore a different sound in jazz, and loved the idea of blending Sufi ghazals (which are improvisatory in nature) with jazz sounds. The result is a collection of four ragas with voice that was released at Carnegie Hall on Dec. 20th. The first raga, Bhimpalasi, is an afternoon raga with an understated rock beat. The poetry sung by the singer is a well-known Sufi Kalaam (a devotional mystic) called ‘Naina De Akhay’ by the legendary Punjabi Sufi poet Hazrat Shah Hussain, which describes the feelings of silent remorse, where a lover repents falling head over heels for an uncaring beloved, who has now abandoned them.
