Gerry Hemingway: Live at Bau 4
The concert celebrated the performance space established in 2009 by Hildegard and Walter Schär within their family-owned timber company. The occasion also marked the passing of the venue's stewardship to the next generation. A longtime resident of nearby Lucerne and a frequent performer at Bau 4, Hemingway composed the music specifically for the event and assembled a quartet of trusted musical partners.
Joining him are German multi-instrumentalist Frank Gratkowski, whose clarinet and saxophone have intersected with Hemingway's work since well before the drummer relocated from the United States to Europe in 2001; Japanese pianist Izumi Kimura, now based in Ireland and one of Hemingway's closest collaborators; and Swiss bassist Christian Weber, whose versatility has made him one of Europe's most sought-after improvisers. More than simply an all-star ensemble, the quartet functions as a community of listeners, each musician instinctively responding to the slightest gesture made by another.
The performance revolves around two expansive Hemingway compositions, the twenty-three-minute "Slivers" and the thirty-six-minute "Bau 4 Assemble," separated by the intimate improvised duet "Third Story Variation" featuring Hemingway and Kimura. Rather than presenting clearly defined themes and solos, the music unfolds organically, its form emerging through interaction and attentive listening.
Hemingway's compositions seem to be stitched together by invisible threads. Ideas circulate, dissolve and reappear in patterns that often remain just beyond the listener's grasp, yet never feel arbitrary. Trust becomes an essential part of the listening experience. Small duos emerge from the ensemble before dissolving back into the quartet, while fleeting motifs surface only to be transformed into new textures and colors.
What makes this recording so compelling is that touch functions not merely as technique but as philosophy. Every sound seems born from physical contact, with wood, metal, string, air or skin, and every gesture leaves a trace that shapes what follows. Texture becomes the music's narrative, replacing conventional melody or pulse as its primary expressive force. Live At Bau 4 is ultimately a reminder that improvisation is as much about feeling as hearing. Hemingway and his quartet invite us not simply to listen, but to experience sound as something tangible, revealing a richly textured musical landscape where every touch matters.
