Eden Har-Gil: Hearts of Palm
Davis delivers a precision and clarity that slices through the album's more ethereal elements like a beacon through fog. Her technical prowess on alto sax is unmistakably displayed, deftly guiding listeners through intricate melodic twists with aplomb. Conversely, Lo Wood, performing on baritone sax, offers a warmer, earthier tone, grounding the ethereal escapades that Davis propels. Their interaction is not so much a battle of saxophones as it is a sophisticated ballet.
The title track, "Hearts of Palm," sets the tonelike a clandestine embrace between the listener's soul and the saxophones. Here, Davis and Wood conjure a lush soundscape as smooth as a well-aged whiskey, with extended dialogues and compelling solos. "Embedded" highlights the drummer's rock-infused groove, with Davis and Lo passing the melody back and forth like a hot jazz potato amidst their jubilant improvisational exchanges and perfectly synced lines.
"Leaf" provides a reflective pause in the album's journey. On this track, Davis' sax floats effortlessly like a leaf on a gentle breeze, while Lo's baritone sax lays down a rich foundation. The album culminates with "Nethermead," a track pulsating with a bubbly calypso/Latin rhythm as Davis and Lo harmonize, enveloping the listener in a sonic embrace as warm as a sunbeam. Har-Gil's nimble tom patterns and slick fills, complemented by Douglas' robust bass lines, complete the ornate soundscape.
Har-Gil has crafted an album that is both sophisticated and accessible. Hearts of Palm is a sonic feast, enriching the soul with its lush textures and virtuosic performances. The album stands as a vibrant testament that in the right hands, jazz is not just music; it is pure alchemy.
