For Electric Guitar stands as a major artistic statement from Montréal-based composer and electric guitarist Tim Brady. He began playing guitar at age eleven, initially teaching himself acoustic folk styles before transitioning to electric guitar during his teenage years. Brady later pursued formal training at Concordia University and the New England Conservatory, establishing the groundwork for a career that would persistently challenge the boundaries between composition, improvisation, and experimental practice.

Over more than four decades, Brady has emerged as a singular voice in contemporary music, integrating jazz, rock, minimalism, modernism and electroacoustic approaches into a highly personal language. He has composed over 100 works, including operas, symphonies, concertos and large-scale guitar ensemble.

This double album marks Brady’s first major solo guitar release since 24 Frames (Ambiances Magnétiques, 2012). All of the music was composed and recorded following his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in November 2023. Rather than presenting itself as a document of limitation, the album conveys focus, control and expressive authority, lending the performances a quiet emotional gravity without sentimentality or self-conscious framing.

The album’s three extended works reveal the breadth of Brady’s vision for solo electric guitar. It unfolds in three movements with the scope of a concerto. Through layered effects, rapid articulation and shifting textures, Brady generates orchestral mass from a single instrument, alternating driving post-minimalist momentum with expansive, atmospheric passages. Progressive rock intensity collides with modernist fragmentation, resulting in music that feels forceful, volatile and inward-looking.

“Really, Really Solo Electric Guitar Music (2025)” offers a stark contrast. Free of looping and heavy processing, this fifteen-minute fantasia foregrounds pure six-string technique. Brady’s lucid phrasing, fluid melodic contours and sustained resonance draw from classical guitar traditions while exploiting the electric instrument’s distinctive timbral flexibility. The result is intimate and exposed, emphasizing emotional directness and technical discipline without external augmentation.

Disc two presents “9.75 Pieces About Change (2023),” a series of character studies ranging from brief vignettes to more extended explorations. Reintroducing pedals and effects, Brady crafts varied sonic identities that touch on Nordic jazz atmospheres, ambient textures, percussive attacks and propulsive rhythmic figures. While the abrupt shifts between sketches and longer forms can feel episodic, recurring gestures and evolving motifs provide cohesion, particularly in the longer entries, where density and mood shift with controlled intensity.

For Electric Guitar is a demanding listen, but its scale and abstraction are central to its artistic force. Brady favors immersion over immediacy, asking listeners to meet the music on its own uncompromising terms. While its duration and density may challenge casual audiences, the album succeeds fully as a bold and deeply considered statement, reaffirming Brady’s place as a vital and restless voice in contemporary guitar music.
