Ivo Perelman + Tom Rainey: Duologues 1 Turning Point
Innovative saxophonist Ivo Perelman thrives in small groups with like-minded musicians, as is amply demonstrated throughout his one-of-a-kind oeuvre. In drummer Tom Rainey, Perelman has found yet another perfect partner for shared improvisational explorations. The two men have complementary artistic visions as demonstrated by the superb Truth Seeker (Fundacja Słuchaj, 2024) with bassist Mark Helias. Similar ingenuity imbues their first duo recording, the provocative Duologues 1: Turning Point on Perelman's Ibeji label.

The seven interlinked tracks form a suite of sorts, which has a haunting ambience. Within it the music varies from introspective conversations to abstract sonic experimentations. On the first track, Perelman's breathy tones and Rainey's sparse beats immediately set the mood for the poignant dialogue that follows. More than a traditional back and forth, the pair engage in simultaneous, stimulating, musings. Perelman blows his trademark sinewy phrases which are often reminiscent of the human voice. Rainey's drum kit restlessly rumbles. The performance gains momentum, reaching its peak in the riotous conclusion.

The subsequent piece follows naturally from its predecessor as it starts off on the same fiery note. Perelman and Rainey each launch into delightfully dissonant interwoven solos which are, at times, divergent while, at others, quite harmonious. Perelman's angular lines flow with intense passion and Rainey's drums thunder with breathtaking polyrhythms. A wistful serenity seamlessly ensues which dovetails into the opening of "Track Three." This has a brooding, mystical edge. Perelman contributes an ethereal element while Rainely mesmerizes with his complex refrains. Together they build a spiritual aura which is both primal and Zen-like in its quality.

"Track Four" starts off with quietude yet it evolves into a dynamic and fiery repartee. Perelman and Rainey deftly anticipate the trajectory of each other's extemporizations. Together they bring the tune to a stimulating and explosive crescendo. Then a poetic and somber discourse ensues as Perelman plays with sublime lyricism while Rainey percusses with subtlety and nuance. Opening with melancholy, "Track Five" transforms into a joyous celebration akin to a two person brass band. Meanwhile "Track Six" fluctuates between captivating atonality and lullaby-like melodicism.

"Track Seven"'s shimmering hues and undulating theme make for the sublime finale of this uniquely satisfying album. Perelman and Rainey have recorded a vibrant and captivating session which is in keeping with their singular styles and, as the title suggests, a new direction for their creativity.
