Jason Kruk: Beyond the Veil

Veteran New York City-based drummer and composer Jason Kruk leverages decades of technical precision and international touring into a major leap forward on Sun Goose Records. Rather than a standard rhythm showcase, his latest release is an ambitious, collaborative suite bridging structured composition and open improvisation.

The album unfolds as a deeply conceptual journey through tracks named after natural elements and archetypes. Kruk anchors complex polyrhythms with a muscular yet nuanced touch, swinging seamlessly between aggressive fusion workouts and meditative stillness. Even so, traversing the expansive 12-track arc reveals a few less interesting passages where the momentum dips and individual tracks do not quite resonate.

A defining strength of the record is the extraordinary caliber of fretboard talent assembled in the studio. Guitarists Wayne Krantz and Adam Rogers, alongside Snarky Puppy contributor Bob Lanzetti, leave indelible marks across the soundscape. The opener "Ascension," saxophonist Brian Donohoe and pianist Art Hirahara impart forceful yet melodic phrasings, riding atop the leader's upfront pulse as the ensemble locks into a driving groove. On "Awakening," Lanzetti assumes primary guitar duties for a hypnotic mid-tempo excursion backed by slippery funk grooves from Kruk, building steam via soulful inflections, sustain-heavy wailing, and shimmering chord clusters that dissolve into textural exploration. Later in the program, Krantz steps into the fray on "The Eagle" with his signature angular and deconstructed melodic sense, utilizing bone-crushing distortion and finicky picking during the bridge to push the ensemble into unpredictable territory before resolving the tension with a striking rhythmic shift. On "Wind," Hirahara opens with understated Rhodes progressions before Donohoe enters with a soft motif, while abrupt time changes and a few diversions generate fresh momentum beneath sparkling frontline solos. The interplay between the leader and these virtuosos generates a crackling friction, proving that Kruk is entirely comfortable yielding the spotlight to spark genuine musical dialogue.

Ultimately, this release succeeds because it values emotional resonance and patience over mere flash. The arrangements give every voice the space to develop organic ideas, cementing Kruk's status not just as a first-call timekeeper, but as a resourceful modern composer.
