Patrick Bebelaar - Joe Fonda - Herbert Joos: Between Shadows and Light

Between Shadow and Light è disco che si colloca in una sorta di terra di nessuno, zona franca musicale dai contorni indefiniti, tra luci e ombre per l'appunto, tra improvvisazione e atmosfere cameristiche, tra sottigliezze timbriche e raffinatezze armoniche, tra omaggi dodecafonici costruiti su accordi maggiori ("Small Melody for A. Schonberg") e la consolidata tradizione jazzistica ("I Remember Clifford"). Ed è disco di grande magnetismo, sia estetico che emozionale, grazie ad una organizzazione ciclica che racchiude tre sensibilità diverse, in afflato comune verso una musica che soffia universale, sospesa nel vuoto, svincolata da concetti temporali. Tra i dieci brani, tutti meritevoli di attenzione, con più motivi di interesse che si incrociano ripetutamente e ogni volta rivelano nuovi particolari, troviamo tre perle solitarie.

"My One and Only Love," forse insuperata nelle versione di Johnny Hartman & John Coltrane, è qui affrontata da Patrick Bebelaar con una vena romantica spogliata da eccessi e con interessanti richiami folklorici. Herbert Joos esibisce tutta la sua maestria in "Conversation with I.D.," dialogo con se stesso e le sue due trombe (una delle quali con sordina), dall'atmosfera spiritata, fantasia e sensibilità sconfinate, controllo dello strumento impeccabile. In "Stella by StarLight" Joe Fonda fa cantare in maniera mirabile il suo contrabbasso dal timbro scuro e austero, con uno sguardo alla lezione dei padri dello strumento e l'anelito verso la libertà e la ricerca affinata dalla lunga frequentazione con Anthony Braxton.
