Stephen Gauci, Sandy Ewen: Studio Sessions Vol. 6

Read "Studio Sessions Vol. 6" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Ava Mendoza, Vijay Anderson, Stephen Gauci: Studio Sessions Vol. 4

Read "Studio Sessions Vol. 4" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Stephen Gauci / Adam Lane / Kevin Shea: Bulletins From The Frontline

Read "Stephen Gauci / Adam Lane / Kevin Shea: Bulletins From The Frontline" reviewed by John Sharpe

Until the pandemic hit, tenor saxophonist Stephen Gauci's trio, with bassist Adam Lane and drummer Kevin Shea, formed the keystone of the Bushwick Improvisers Series organized by the hornman. The band had played every week since the summer of 2017, give or take the occasional substitution, either as a threesome or with the addition of guitarist Sandy Ewen (as heard on Studio Sessions Vol 5 (Gaucimusic, 2019)). As a result they are more than familiar with each other's proclivities, and ...

Stephen Gauci / Santiago Leibson / Shawn Lovato / Colin Hinton: Live at Scholes Street Studio

Read "Live at Scholes Street Studio" reviewed by John Sharpe

When tenor saxophonist Stephen Gauci was offered a set at Brooklyn's Scholes Street Studio performance space in December 2019 he leapt at the chance. At short notice he pulled together three former duet partners in the classic jazz quartet formation, though they had never previously performed as a single unit. So this is both the group's first recording and its first appearance. Safe to say, it probably won't be the last. Argentinian pianist Santiago Leibson gives the ...

Stephen Gauci Pandemic Duets

Read "Stephen Gauci Pandemic Duets" reviewed by John Sharpe

When everything shut down in March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, New York City native tenor saxophonist Stephen Gauci initiated what he thought would be a set of five duet recordings in a refusal to be cowed by the lack of performance opportunities. In fact the collection has run to some 19 entries over that summer, with the four releases here, each of just over 30-minutes duration, being just among the first. For this initial batch ...

Gauci Pandemic Duets and More!

Read "Gauci Pandemic Duets and More!" reviewed by Bob Osborne

This week lots of new music from Jesse Ryan, Junk Magic, Noah Haidu, Dave Young, and James Brandon Lewis, a focus on Cambridge UK musician Ryan McCaffrey and more great improvisation from Stephen Gauci with his pandemic duets. As Gauci says “I resolved to safely record a series of duet recordings in order to fully express musically, the intense emotions we are all feeling during this challenging period. What was originally meant to be a string of five duet recordings, ...
