Dena DeRose: Ode to the Road

Read "Ode to the Road" reviewed by Jack Bowers

To those who may have wondered what ever happened to singer / pianist Dena DeRose, the answer is nothing—and everything. DeRose has lived for the last fifteen years in Graz, Austria, where she is professor of jazz voice at the University of Music and the Performing Arts. She still tours frequently, sometimes returning “home" to the states for gigs and / or record dates. Along the way, DeRose has met and befriended a sizable number of talented artists, three of ...

Sheila Jordan: Lucky to Be Me

Read "Lucky to Be Me" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Sheila Jordan at Mezzrow

Read "Sheila Jordan at Mezzrow" reviewed by Tyran Grillo

Sheila Jordan Mezzrow New York, NY January 10, 2019 If the art of song is only as vibrant as the colors from which one draws, then Sheila Jordan perhaps has the broadest palette of any living jazz vocalist. At the tender age of 90, she is blessed with a patience that imbues every syllable with wisdom and experience. Sandwiched between the headliners during New York City's 2019 Winter Jazzfest, her unaffiliated performance in a sardine-packed ...

Vossajazz 2017 Various Venues Voss, Norway April 7-9, 2017 Some places punch above their weight. Voss is one. With just 14,000 inhabitants, this small Norwegian town in the county of Hordaland, can boast a world-renowned sky-diving training centre, the country's foremost folk music academy, one of the best wine cellars in Scandinavia and, in Vossajazz, an outstanding international music festival that offers so much more than its simple name implies. The jazz part ...

Sheila Jordan: Better Than Anything

Read "Better Than Anything" reviewed by Tyran Grillo

Better Than Anything showcases Sheila Jordan in an unusual trio with bassist Harvie S and pianist Alan Broadbent (subbing for Jordan's go-to, Steve Kuhn). The latter two triangulate Jordan's incomparability with graciousness in this archival treasure, restored from a 1991 live recording at Kimball's East in Oakland. Yet the rarity of the combination is easily forgotten once the listener becomes aware of its interlocking geometry. The title song seals a foundation between the instrumentalists, Sheila scatting so fluidly throughout that ...
