Roberto Magris Quintet: Morgan Rewind: A Tribute to Lee Morgan, Vol. 1

Read "Morgan Rewind: A Tribute to Lee Morgan, Vol. 1" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Roberto Magris’ Journey to the Heart of Hard Bop

Read "Roberto Magris’ Journey to the Heart of Hard Bop" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Italian pianist and composer Roberto Magris has carved his name in jazz stone over the past decade with recordings like Check-In (Black Saint, 2005), Il Bello Del Jazz (Black Saint, 2006) and Current Views (Black Saint, 2010) with his ensemble Europlane, and Kansas City Bound (Pami, 2009) and Mating Call (JMood, 2010) (which foreshadows the hard bop of pianist Tadd Dameron) with his various other groups. He is a sturdy mainstream pianist with impressive chops, both instrumentally and compositionally.

Roberto Magris: One Night In With Hope And More...Vol.1

Read "One Night In With Hope And More...Vol.1" reviewed by Edward Blanco

Italian composer and pianist Roberto Magris is an internationally renowned artist reminiscent of piano masters like Kenny Drew, McCoy Tyner and the legendary Bill Evans. A veteran jazz musician, Magris has recorded eighteen albums in a career that has spanned over three decades and, with One Night In With Hope And More...Vol. 1, continues his collaboration with JMood Records, documenting a set of trio music by some forgotten bebop masters. With bassist Elisa Pruett and legendary drummer Albert “Tootie" Heath, ...

Roberto Magris Quintet: Morgan Rewind: A Tribute to Lee Morgan Vol. 1

Read "Morgan Rewind: A Tribute to Lee Morgan Vol. 1" reviewed by Jerry D'Souza

It isn't always easy paying tribute to a legend, but pianist Roberto Magris does it quite successfully on this tip of the hat to Lee Morgan, one of the defining figures of hard bop. Magris succeeds because he has a trumpeter, in Brandon Lee, who is not afraid of being adventurous, and a more than adept alto saxophonist in Logan Richardson, The pianist, as he has shown, is comfortable in any frame, playing with virtuosity, finesse and clear vision.

Roberto Magris Quintet: Morgan Rewind: A Tribute to Lee Morgan, Vol. 1

Read "Morgan Rewind: A Tribute to Lee Morgan, Vol. 1" reviewed by Jack Bowers

For one who left us far too soon (he was shot to death at age 33), Edward Lee Morgan left quite an extensive legacy as a trumpeter, composer and recording artist. In paying tribute to Morgan, pianist Roberto Magris has a splendid idea. What he does not have, of course, is Lee Morgan or any of the celebrated saxophonists who played alongside him (Hank Mobley, Benny Golson, Pepper Adams, Clifford Jordan, Wayne Shorter, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, to name only ...

Roberto Magris Quintet: Morgan Rewind: A Tribute To Lee Morgan Vol. 1

Read "Morgan Rewind: A Tribute To Lee Morgan Vol. 1" reviewed by Edward Blanco

With this first installment of a two-CD tribute to Lee Morgan, Italian jazz pianist/composer Roberto Magris delivers Morgan Rewind: A Tribute To Lee Morgan Vol. 1. A longtime fan of the late trumpeter, since his humble beginnings in the '70s, Magris gladly accepted a challenge from Paul Collins, producer of the Kansas City jazz label JMood Records, when he recommended the project. Making this a unique endeavor, Collins also managed to convince drummer Albert “Tootie" Heath to perform with Magris' ...

Roberto Magris Quintet: Mating Call

Read "Mating Call" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Even though drummer Idris Muhammad may be the only member of the group to elicit nods of recognition here in the States, Italian pianist Roberto Magris' quintet is world-class in every respect, consistently affirming its singular prowess on Mating Call, the second release from Paul Collins' Kansas City-based J-Mood Records. Magris also headlined the label's initial recording, presiding over a quartet (including the late bassist Art Davis) on Kansas City Outbound in 2007. Three of the album's ...
