Leap Day Trio: Live at The Cafe Bohemia

Read "Live at The Cafe Bohemia" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

Drummer Matt Wilson and tenor saxophonist Jeff Lederer have worked on many projects together, over a thirty-year period, covering everything from Christmas songs to the poetry of Carl Sandburg. This particular album finds them in a stripped-down trio, playing some of their most intense music ever, live at New York's reopened Cafe Bohemia. The trio's third member is bassist Mimi Jones, a recent acquaintance of both men, who fits right in with their freewheeling dialogues. Lederer blows with ...

Matt Wilson: Live at The Cafe Bohemia

Read "Live at The Cafe Bohemia" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

From its modest opening in 1955 until its closing in 1960, 15 Barrow Street in Greenwich Village, aka Cafe Bohemia, housed such progressive jazz creators as Oscar Pettiford, Horace Silver and Kenny Dorham. Charlie Parker, who lived across the street, was booked to open the club and play for drinks but passed away before his run began. Cannonball Adderley made his New York debut there sitting in for Pettiford's regular sax man Jerome Richardson. A slew of hydrogen hot discs, ...

Hot Tone Music: Creating Great Music of Today

Read "Hot Tone Music: Creating Great Music of Today" reviewed by Jakob Baekgaard

There was a time when the only possibility for an artist was to record for a major label, but nowadays things have changed. While major labels are struggling to make the money they used to do, many of them have also stopped being innovators. Instead, they churn out repackaged product and focus on new music that is guaranteed to sell. Patience and long term talent development isn't a thing that is seen very often. Fortunately, in spite ...

Mimi Jones: Balance

Read "Mimi Jones: Balance" reviewed by Chris M. Slawecki

Balance is one of three new titles released in February 2014 by Hot Tone Music, the label founded by bassist/vocalist Mimi Jones. “Hot Tone Music was created to give chances to those who may have been overlooked and denied the necessary support and knowledge to develop," Jones explains. “Women are a big part of that group, and so I always look out for them. Women have come a long way but are still a minority in jazz, so we've formed ...

Mimi Jones: Balance

Read "Balance" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Virtuoso bassist and superlative bandleader Mimi Jones' (AKA Miriam Sullivan) Balance is a delightful album filled with 79 minutes of engaging music. Despite the title, however, it is an unevenly structured work. The edgy, dramatic “The Incy Wincy Spider" for instance completely deconstructs the children's rhyme into an intriguing, darkly hued and haunting piece. Jones' evocative vocals evolve over percussionist Shirazette Tinnin's angular beats, Jones' own plucked and bowed strings and keyboardist Miki Hayama's rolling sonic cascade. The ...

Mimi Jones: Balance

Read "Balance" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

NYC-native bassist-raconteur Mimi Jones founded Hot Tone records in 2009, releasing her debut, A New Day. Jones states the label ..."was created to give chances to those who may have been overlooked and denied the necessary support and knowledge to develop." Specifically, and appropriately, the focus of the label has evolved as a resource for women jazz instrumentalists. After an incubation period of five years, Hot Tone records detonates with the release of Jones' second effort as a leader, Balance. ...
