John Beasley, Magnus Lindgren, SWR Big Band: Bird Lives

by Jim Worsley
Round about 2017 there was a meeting of the minds. Composers and musicians John Beasley and Magnus Lindgren evolved as kindred spirits, and chose to work together on a project engulfing their shared appreciation of Charlie Parker. This tribute to the man who came to be known simply as Bird, had trouble taking flight. Obstacles, none bigger than Covid, came along and stood in the way. by Vic Albani
Stile e ricercatezza. La cifra di questo nuovo lavoro di due giganti del jazz contemporaneo quali Joe Lovano e Dave Douglas è tutta in questi due vocaboli. The group released its first CD, Soundprints: Live At The Monterey Jazz Festival (Blue Note Records) in 2015, and followed it up with Scandal (Greenleaf Records, 2018). Both of these previous outings included fresh arrangements of Shorter compositions along with tunes from ...

The loss of gig and the accompanying income stream, caused by the insidious and evil coronavirus, has hurt musicians across all genres. It has separated them from friends and band mates, from projects and from going to special placesphysically and artistically. Coping with it is the order of the day. It has created some dark moments and also shed light on the characteristic of resiliency that dwells in the human spirit. Creativity, the hallmark of jazz, has kept ...

A mixed bag of great new sounds. After last year's successful big band outing, Blue Soul, guitarist Dave Stryker is back with his hard-driving, deep grooving B3 organ group on his new recordingBaker's Circle. The Tania Giannouli Trio's unique sounds have been described as Manfred Eicher's dream of a Mediterranean holiday. Tom Swafford and Zachary Swanson deliver a fascinating exploratory free improvisation project. The debut album of Joe Lovano's Trio Tapestry was one of 2019's most talked-about releases. This musical ...
