Ingrid Jensen: At Sea

Read "At Sea" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

Ingrid Jensen: At Sea

Ingrid Jensen's ArtistShare debut offers a fresh insight into a worldly trumpeter already established as a formidable player in the hard bop idiom. On At Sea she embarks on a journey into the often treacherous territory of post-Miles electro/acoustic jazz (where other trumpeters' individual voices are frequently eclipsed) and proves that she is a truly original composer.

Dispensing with the customary front-line foil of a saxophonist, Jensen surrounds her sound with Geoff Keezer's orchestral keyboard accompaniment. The title track is ...

With her latest recording, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen shares her interpretation of several fresh originals and two jazz standards. Jensen pays close attention to her instrument's tone quality and achieves only the best.

But it takes more than a quick listen to hone in on the genuine spirit that the trumpeter and her sidemen convey on At Sea. Dreamy landscapes come intertwined with hot trumpet romps and mellow flugelhorn cascades that paint vivid pictures. Impressions abound. Jensen's horn lets ...

In writing about trumpeter Ingrid Jensen's Here on Earth, I concluded with this thought: “While Jensen's style is distinctive, and she is a capable leader who surrounds herself with performers who understand the importance of interplay, one walks away... feeling that there is more to be seen, that she has yet to deliver a definitive statement.

With At Sea she delivers that definitive statement. While she shares compositional credit with others, including band mate/keyboardist Geoffrey Keezer and Cole Porter, there's ...

Trumpeter/flugelhornist Ingrid Jensen continues to impress with At Sea, her fifth album since 1994. She has done many sessions as a sideman and made several appearances on the BET Jazz Channel; not only is she a composer and bandleader, but also an educator. At age 25, she was the youngest professor at Austria's Bruckner Conservatory. Through the assistance of her friend and orchestra leader Maria Schneider, Jensen is now affiliated with ArtistShare.

The strategic mix of At Sea ...

Ingrid Jensen: At Sea

On At Sea, Ingrid Jensen continues to cement her reputation as one of the finest players on the trumpet and flugelhorn. She carries a firm grip on the dynamics into the lair of invention to mine some resplendent nuggets, adding mood and atmosphere to make the music throb with vitality and spirit. Jensen draws from a wide palette here. The arc of the music moves from deep, taut ballads to bright, sunny tunes that sparkle. The final layer of beckoning ...

Ingrid Jensen: Here on Earth

Read "Here on Earth" reviewed by Ken Franckling

From her arrival on the New York City jazz scene ten years ago, it was clear to those listening closely that trumpeter Ingrid Jensen was blessed with a fresh, confident sound and versatile musicality. She had followed studies at Boston's Berklee College of Music with three years of teaching and performing in Europe. And she'd spent some of that time being mentored by the late Art Farmer.

Because of her power, grace and consistency, it is only fitting that the ...
