Hiromi: Place To Be

by Jeff Winbush
Some musicians take the tortured artist thing too far. With their on-stage, in the zone" demeanor, some pianists look as if they're on the verge of a heart attack. If they relaxed a bit would anyone think less of them? Hiromi Uehara is certainly a serious musician yet never leaves the impression of taking herself too seriously. She's having too much fun for that.By any measurement, her last two years have been busy. Backed by her band, Hiromi's ...

If music reviews are starting to have an air of familiarity about them, it's because the music calls for it. So many new releases are comprised mostly--if not entirely--of cover songs, summarizing the sound can be as effortless as striking the on/off switch. Fortunately, some artists aren't content to merely record their version of something old. There's only one problem reviewing an album by Hiromi Uehara, but it's a big one.You can quickly run out of superlatives. On Beyond Standard, her fifth album and the second one under the group name Hiromi's Sonicbloom, the always adventuresome pianist doesn't so much pay tribute to standards such as Duke Ellington's Caravan" and Rodgers and Hammerstein's My Favorite Things" as break them apart, put them back together in a way that best pleases her and generally ...

Globalization has penetrated every aspect of our lives, and pianist Hiromi Uehara could not be more at home, wherever that may be. Commenting on her 2007 Telarc release, Time Control, Hiromi says, I was inspired to write these pieces because my life is so hectic. I regularly feel jet-lagged and always seem to be in a different time zone. I find myself at airports with more ...

Hiromi Uehara won't be pigeonholed. I really don't have barriers to any kind of music, she says, adding that her tastes include heavy metal, classical music and anything else. That might explain why her music can't be defined by genre. Of course, there are elements of jazz, but this Japanese-born keyboardist/pianist easily blends rock rhythms, classical melodies and other musical styles into her compositions.
At 26, Hiromi has already accomplished much in her career. When she was just 17, she ...

"It is time to be out there...in many different ways. - from Hiromi's liner notes to Time Control.
It's true. She can easily take Best of the Year honors with this album, but Hiromi is still an unknown quantity. Many have yet to hear the exciting and creative sounds that come from this talented pianist and her fiery band.
In guitarist David Fuczynski, she's found a truly creative artist who carries on the timeless ...
