Eliane Elias: Something For You: Eliane Elias Sings and Plays Bill Evans

by Dan McClenaghan
Everybody digs Bill Evans, the pianist who changed the face of the piano trio in jazz with his Sunday at the Village Vanguard (Riverside Records, 1961) and Waltz for Debby (Riverside Records, 1961). These were the albums that brought a then unheard of level of interaction between the pianist and his trio mates, bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian.Things haven't been the same since. There are countless piano trios that have been influenced by that groundbreaking group.

Eliane Elias Dizzy's Club Coca Cola New York, New York Wednesday, January 23, 2008 The other night at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, high above the whirling traffic of Columbus Circle, there was a full moon and a full house as the Eliane Elias Trio played in support of their Bill Evans tribute CD, Something for You (Blue Note, 2008). The innovations of pianist William ...

by R.J. DeLuke
The brilliant pianist Eliane Elias, who hails from the land of so much beautiful indigenous music, but calls American jazz her first love, has always been touched by the music of Bill Evans. It started at childhood.
The first that I remember, I was about ten or eleven years old," she says, recalling listening to trio records her mother had around the house. I was really enchanted by his approach to harmony and also his melodic and lyrical ...

by Bridget A. Arnwine
Eliane Elias is comfortable in her own skin. The pianist/composer learned to play piano in her native Sao Paulo at the age of seven and began transcribing jazz recordings by the age of twelve. For years she worked to introduce herself through her music, relying on her natural proclivity for infusing the music she loves with her cultural self.
Elias has maintained an unyielding commitment as a pianist/composer who just so happens to be a Brazilian female, in an industry ...

by AAJ Italy Staff

by Keiran Smalley
What the world needs right now is another CD of Jobim covers, right? Admit it: this isn't the most original idea ever. I am starting to lose count of how many people have covered Desafinado, and when you consider that Eliane Elias is possessed of a paper-thin voice a la Astrud Gilberto, you have to again wonder. What is the point? Is there anything new to say here?
Well, the good news is that there is a point, and I ...

by Mark Sabbatini
This is definitely no day at the beach. Whether that's good or bad is highly subjective for A Jazz Portrait Of Brian Wilson, a 17-song tribute by contemporary artists such as Don Grusin, the Clark Burroughs Group and The Yellowjackets. Originally a 1997 Blue Note release, it was remastered and rereleased by IN2N Entertainment in 2004. Those not expecting instrumentals close in form to the Beach Boys leader will hear interesting ideas at work. But there's no question ...
