Craig Raymond and the Next Generation Big Band: Let's Dance Band Stand

Read "Let's Dance Band Stand" reviewed by Jack Bowers

When big bands were king, the impetus behind their success was as much about dancing as it was listening. People thronged to see and hear bands led by Miller, Goodman, the Dorsey brothers, Harry James, Charlie Barnet, Artie Shaw, Chick Webb, Andy Kirk and their peers but listened for the most part while dancing cheek-to-cheek with someone near and dear to them. The most popular songs were those that best adapted to that delightful manner of exercise.

The Tony Corbiscello Big Band: Real Time

Read "Real Time" reviewed by Jack Bowers

In reviewing an earlier album by Tony Corbiscello's New York-area big band ( In Full Swing , Alanna 5581), I wrote that “the band is squarely on top of every assignment, and Corbiscello is an admirable big-band drummer who never lets the momentum wane.... [the] ensemble reminds me of a less jazz-oriented version of the Lew Anderson Big Band, which also makes its home in New York City." Real Time offers essentially more of the same, with at least one ...

Craig Raymond and the Next Generation Big Band: Big Band Concert & Frank Sinatra Tribute

Read "Big Band Concert & Frank Sinatra Tribute" reviewed by Jack Bowers

The second album by trumpeter Craig Raymond’s Next Generation Big Band is almost a mirror image of the first; that is to say, a bright and swinging jazz/dance session from start to finish. There are some modest points of departure, however, as Raymond has added a few new wrinkles—a “Frank Sinatra tribute” by vocalist Lou Dottoli, a number of shapely tenor solos courtesy of Philadelphia standout Larry McKenna, and three tastefully drawn arrangements by Grant Whisler. While it goes ...

Craig Raymond and the Next Generation Big Band: It's Our Time

Read "It's Our Time" reviewed by Jack Bowers

If the name Craig Raymond sounds vaguely familiar, that’s because he’s the son of longtime Philadelphia bandleader Al Raymond, who recently retired and handed the reins to his trumpet-playing offspring (hence the name “Next Generation Band”). Stylistically, the band remains roughly the same, about equal parts jazz and dance music, but the younger Raymond keeps everyone sharply focused and the ensemble swings with abandon on “Night Train,” chief arranger Grant Whisler’s “Orbit,” John Philip Sousa’s martial flag-waver “Stars and Stripes ...

Tony Corbiscello Big Band: In Full Swing

Read "In Full Swing" reviewed by Dave Nathan

Selected as the orchestra to open for Frank Sinatra's final tour, Tony Corbiscello's 16-piece big band pulls out most of the stops on a play list of fourteen tunes. If not all big band staples, many are tunes that big bands had their book. The musical agenda includes three originals by Marion Evans who also did the arrangements which are not only tasteful but diverse, i.e, they all don't sound the same. Stocked with players from the New York area ...

Spitfire Band: Big Band Swing Things

Read "Big Band Swing Things" reviewed by Dave Nathan

When I picked up this album, I had a nagging feeling that I had seen it before. A check of my data base indicated that it's a reissue of a disc that the Canadian based Spitfire Band did for Columbia Records several years ago called In Flight. A call to the album's producer, Bill Lawrence confirmed this. It's a bit misleading not to include this information on the back cover of the album so that prospective purchasers are aware they ...
