Georg Breinschmid: Fire

Read "Fire" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Austrian bassist Georg Breinschmid's Fire is a collection of live and studio recordings, in a variety of genres, all served with a healthy dose of refreshing irreverence and exuberant humor. This in no way means that Breinschmid and his band mates are only about fun and games. On the contrary, their high quality musicianship and immense talents are evident throughout. For example, on “Suite 7" Breinschmid plays the complex melody with extreme agility while simultaneously keeping time on his ...

Georg Breinschmid: Fire

The North American cognoscenti are not so hip after all. Not many will have heard of the Vienna Art Orchestra and fewer still will know of its one-time bassist, the classically trained, Georg Breinschmid. Breinschmid is a maddeningly ingenious virtuoso musician, who, picking up where Frank Zappa and Victor Borga left off, is breaking down musical barriers faster than they can be put up and bringing more pure joy to the unexpurgated enjoyment of serious music than many musicians on ...

Georg Breinschmid: Fire

Read "Fire" reviewed by Larry Taylor

A mixture of outrageous humor and subtle beauty make up Fire, from Austrian bassist Georg Breinschmid. Such a conflicting opinion needs explaining. The 14 mostly originals (plus a bonus disc of four additional tracks) combine live and studio recordings using two different groupings. There are silly vocals and shameless parodies of polkas and classics--think Shostakovich ...

Georg Breinschmid: Brein's World

Read "Brein's World" reviewed by Raul d'Gama Rose

Austrian bassist/composer Georg Breinschmid is a rare phenomenon who continues to amaze, not simply with his outstanding virtuosity, but with his acute sense of American blues and jazz music. If that sounds like an unlikely mouthful, it is, because the facts far outweigh the fantasy. He has sat in with Archie Shepp, the late Charlie Mariano, Kenny Drew Jr., Biréli Lagrène, the Vienna Art Orchestra, and many others, when he turned his back on his regular gig with the Vienna ...

Georg Breinschmid: Brein's World

Read "Brein's World" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Georg Breinschmid is a madman; a genius madman, but a madman just the same. “Schnucki von Heanois" is a Yiddish Rap and is not even the subject of this piece. Breinschmid's brand of music is a bit hard to describe, but here goes. The bassist takes whatever musical tradition striking him at the time and infuses it with such a potent Eastern European spirit that it's impossible to know if you should dance a polka or a bluegrass jig.
