Blood, Sweat, Drum + Bass: In the Spirit of...

The 25-30 piece Danish big band Blood Sweat Drums + Bass isn't your typical big band. The juggernaut steered by Jens Christian “Chappe" Jensen meshes traditional jazz sections of trumpet, saxophone and trombone with electronics and electric guitar, and has incorporated DJs and rappers on occasion. And, as the name intimates, a pulsating rhythm section comprising two drummers and a percussionist and two bassists inject wicked grooves into the brew. In the Spirit of... (Blood Sweat Media, 2014) is a ...

Blood Sweat & Tears: Child Is Father To The Man

Back in the 1960s, keyboardist, vocalist Al Kooper played a prominent role as a coordinator and innovator in the flourishing blues, pop and rock idioms. He played the Hammond organ part on Bob Dylan's “ perennial classic “Like a Rolling Stone," and recorded with wunderkind guitarist Mike Bloomfield, leading to the highly revered Super Session (Columbia, 1968) album also featuring guitarist Stephen Stills, and was a member of the Blues Project. He's also a fabled session artist and scored soundtracks ...

It is not long ago that a lush six-CD box set called A Good Time Was Had By All (Storyville, 2014) was released to celebrate the 50th birthday of The Danish Radio Big Band. The latter has its own ...

Blood, Sweat, Drum + Bass: On the Road to Damascus

Read "On the Road to Damascus" reviewed by Ian Patterson

A study trip to Damascus in 2010 by Blood, Sweat, Drum + Bass's founder Jens Christian “Chappe" Jensen resulted in the east-meets-west On the Road to Damascus, the 27-piece Danish big band's 5th recording. The labyrinths of the ancient walled city--with its souks, cobbled streets and towering mosques--and the rhythms of the modern metropolis alike may have provided the initial impetus, but Jensen's love of modern textures--notably rhythmic--and his artful arrangements bestow a personal vision on these Arabian tales in ...

Blood, Sweat, Drum + Bass: Asa Nisi Masa

Read "Asa Nisi Masa" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Big bands don't come much bigger than Denmark's Blood, Sweat, Drum 'n Bass: 27 musicians, including a fourteeen-piece horn section, a nine-piece rhythm section, electric guitars, two vocalists and electronics. BSDnB purveys a brand of music which shares the iconoclastic approach and raw energy of Spanish saxophonist Llibert Fortuny's Electric Big Band, Belgian big band Flat Earth Society and the modernistic bent of Norwegian band Jaga Jazzist. The influence of the latter is felt on Asi Nisi Asa, through the ...
