Album Description
VOYAGE: Melbourne's jazz-electronic vanguards unleash transcendent debut of pure improvisation
Three daring innovators – Tom Barton, Diego Villalta and Nathan Liow – unite for fearless improvised debut
Melbourne's most adventurous musical minds have converged. Voyage, the debut collaboration between vocalist Tom Barton, guitarist Diego Villalta and pianist Nathan Liow, is a completely improvised odyssey transmuting real-time performance into sonic sculpture – a spellbinding journey through mystical darkness erupting into moments of transcendent awe.
Across evolving orbits of looped and layered vocals, fractals of effected electric guitar, and ethereal pulsating synth drones, Voyage captures what happens when three virtuosos abandon the map entirely. Each track is a microcosm of human experience, delving bravely into the unknown with masterful instrumental command and seamless ensemble presence.
Tom Barton brings his boundary-dissolving approach to contemporary vocals, where acoustic and electronic worlds collide. The Weekend Australian hailed him as "a breakthrough in leading-edge jazz vocals ... always with profound expression."
Diego Villalta, the Salvadoran-Australian guitarist and visual artist, channels Latin, jazz and electronic traditions into cinematic soundscapes. All About Jazz praised his previous work with Barton as "brave, sensitive and not infrequently brilliant music."
Nathan Liow, an award-winning pianist, composer and producer, contributes his daring improvisational vision. Tiny Mixed Tapes captured his artistry: "Nimble piano strokes and comps lift, dip, and flutter like angels ... Liow bends the corners of time effortlessly."
Together, these three acclaimed artists transcend their diverse backgrounds in jazz, electronic and experimental music to uncharted worlds – performances that exist only once, captured in their raw, unrepeatable glory.
