Album Description

It is no coincidence that Bjarke Falgren has chosen to call his new album Turkis. Turquoise is the color of horizons. Of the open. Of everything that awaits when you let go of control and allow yourself to be carried along. Allowing something to happen. And that is precisely what violinist and composer Bjarke Falgren does on his upcoming album Turkis: the music is allowed to flow freely in an open, boundless space.

It is also the color of his vintage Citroën ID19 from 1963; it is the name of the gemstone associated with qualities such as wisdom, freedom, and optimism; and it is the color Bjarke Falgren sees when he lets his gaze wander into infinity, where green meets blue. Out there, where everything flows freely and the world lies open.

Turkis is Bjarke Falgren’s second album under his own name, following a long career in which he has played and recorded with a number of prominent musicians on both the Danish and international scenes. He still plays in many constellations, but with Turkis he firmly underlines his solo career—with an album that is his most personal to date.

“The music is shaped by the places I’ve been and the people I’ve met. Every culture has its own sound and its own climate—and through my music I try to find a universal melody that creates connection when words fall short,” says Bjarke Falgren.

A violin that breathes

Falgren’s approach to the violin is physical, organic, and deeply intuitive. He speaks of “the breathing of the bow” and of making space—not just between the notes, but within them.

“I’ve worked with the bow the way others work with the voice. Like a breath, where there is always air present—even when you’re not saying anything,” says Bjarke Falgren.

Man and bow merge on Turkis in music that is present in the moment, that does not seek to show off, but invites you in.

On Turkis, Falgren displays his broad musical wingspan. From sweeping melodies and dancing rhythms to poetic moments and deep longing. But also silence. Slowness. In the man and in the bow.

Despite being only 46 years old, the four-time DMA award–winning Bjarke Falgren has written himself into the league of the most respected and versatile violinists, emerging as a musician who moves freely between genres while preserving a completely unique tone and musicality. He received his first violin at the age of seven and has never let it go since.

Jazz and folk music are clear markers in his career, but he has also composed film music, played pop/rock, and holds a very special love for authentic folk music and gypsy traditions. Yet he is difficult to pigeonhole—perhaps because curiosity is his strongest driving force. He always wants to see what lies under the next stone.

Regardless of format and collaborator, his music has always been rooted in one thing: connection. To the audience. To the moment. To the melody that feels as if it has always been there.

“I never compose with an idea of where I want to go. I listen. I wait. And when the wind turns, I follow.”

With Turkis, Bjarke Falgren turns yet another page in his career.
