Album Description
The album title Trio is self-explanatory, but Dryden's post-modern compositions qnd approach to the piano/bass/drums lineup draws as much from French classical and old country influences as it does from the modern jazz canon. His Grammy-winning producer calls him "Somewhere between VInce Guaraldi and Paul Bley".
"Arbogast", the opening track, is a medium swing in black and white with a touch of French harmony. "Target" is a driving melodic up-tempo swing, while "Renaissance Basement", "Discarnate", and "Succession" all have different Latin feels. "Empty Sky" is a slow and ominous mood piece that builds into an explosion before it surrenders to a sedate melancholy. “Big Nothing” is a love ballad to sadness- melancholy with a touch of hope (or vice versa).
Most people know Nirvana and their song “All Apologies”, and the trio spins it on its head while capturing the angst of the original. They’ll Never Take Her Love From Me” is a song popularized by Hank Wiliams and “Always Seem to Get Things Wrong (feat. NYC-singer-songwriter Richard Julian)” by Jesse Harris each come to a slow and sad place through a country swing feel. The final track “Jenuary” is a Serge Gainsbourg-inspired waltz with more than a hint of melancholy. Lightcap and Rieser are far more than sidemen here- they interact with Dryden and the songs with a delicate sensibility.
