My Jazz Story

Wayne Shorter said that jazz means "I dare you". I love jazz because it dares the musician and listener to engage in something that's never been played before and will never be played again in the exact same way. It's one of my favorite forms of communication, because what the performer or composer is thinking isn't necessarily what the listener feels, and the story is told differently every performance. Improvisation means musical freedom. Just as you can never step into the exact same river twice, neither can you listen to improvised jazz and experience the same thing every time. It's one reason jazz is America's greatest art form, in my opinion.
