Album Description
This album is a work inspired by the memories and soundscapes I encountered while
traveling across France in 2025. The journey was made possible to commemorate the
publication of Masaki Hanawa, the Other Name for Delicacy: Biography, a book based on
interviews with me by the French writer Christian Soleil.
Having been born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, I found every aspect of the experience—from
urban landscapes and natural environments to encounters with the people who lived
there—refreshingly unfamiliar. The journey challenged many of the assumptions I had long
taken for granted and prompted me to reconsider the way I perceive the world. I hope that
the music born from these experiences can, in turn, offer a new way of listening and sensing
to people living in different places and different times.
Drawing on traditional alto saxophone performance, the integration of field recordings, and
the instrumentalization of environmental sounds, this album was created through the dual
perspectives of improvisation and compositional structure. This album is presented both as
an embodied listening experience that moves between the boundaries of record and memory, environment and performance, and as an exploration of the expressive possibilities of music
itself.
