Terra Solus marks the debut full-length project from South African bassist and composer Nick Ford, featuring eight original compositions that offer a deep conceptual exploration of time, continuity, nature, and humanity's complex relationship with the world. Through this project, Ford delves into what it truly means to be alive on planet Earth. The album takes listeners on an immersive journey, told through the experiences of "The Wanderer," a figure navigating the emotional highs and lows that come with everyday life. By focusing on the turbulence and unpredictability we all encounter in our day-to-day existence, Terra Solus invites introspection while maintaining a musical thread that is both rich and evocative. The album features an impressive lineup of some of Cape Town's finest musicians, adding texture and depth to Ford’s intricate compositions. Leading the charge are alto saxophonist Justin Bellairs, a critically acclaimed performer and Head of Saxophone at the University of Cape Town's South African College of Music, and tenor saxophonist Jayden Harebottle, a rising star in the South African jazz scene. This formidable frontline is supported by a rock-solid rhythm section, including Dylan Fine on guitar, Brathew van Schalkwyk on piano, Langa Dubazana on drums and percussion, and Ford himself on both electric and upright basses. Together, the group weaves through a variety of musical landscapes, exploring unique textures and innovative arrangements that keep the listener deeply engaged throughout. Terra Solus has already made waves on the live circuit, performing at some of Cape Town’s top jazz venues. The project is now set to enter The Nuthouse Recording Studios this October, where Ford and his band will begin the process of capturing the magic of their live performances for the upcoming release. The highly anticipated album will be available to the public in January 2025, released on all major streaming platforms, as well as in CD and vinyl formats. With its thoughtful themes and first-class musicianship, Terra Solus is poised to make a significant mark on the South African jazz scene and beyond.
