Album Description

An adept and tenacious jazz musician from the northwest U.S., tenor saxophonist and composer Ben Britton brings his unique creativity and expression to the fore with a new recording, Sound Expression, highlighting the drive and energy often heard in his playing and writing. Drawing on elements from the jazz tradition, Britton fuses these with melodic counterpoint, rhythmic intricacy, and an adventurous improvisatory spirit. The other members of the ensemble are all gifted musicians in their own right. Britton is joined by two other horn players, Rick Speicher on trumpet and Jarom Christensen on alto sax, and the rhythm section is filled out by Michael Frew on guitar, Dean Rodemack on double bass, and Alex Doetsch on drum set. The six pieces on the recording are the latest in Britton’s efforts to reimagine the music he grew up listening to and playing. Echoes of Dave Holland’s contrapuntal quintet writing and group improvisation are heard alongside well known jazz standards, which are coupled with fresh harmonies, heavy groove, and feel-good swing. “I put together these tunes to try and connect with my favorite parts of jazz,” Britton says, describing the project. “I really like the groove-oriented stuff Chris Potter was putting out when I was younger, but at the same time, both Coltrane and Parker’s approach to jazz have been really influential on me. I wanted to put those things together in a way that’s approachable for listeners and musicians, but I also have these other sounds that I’m hearing and trying to figure out at the same time. Some of all of that got put into these arrangements and compositions and how I’m playing now.” The recording is a marked departure from his last project, Gravity Leak, a sci-fi themed set of compositions based on his novel by the same title. The intensity and imagination heard there are still present in Britton’s latest outing, but his enthusiasm for the jazz tradition can now be clearly heard too.
