Album Description

My band with Can Olgun and Keisuke Matsuno grew out of a friendship spanning more than twenty years. We have been making music together since our youth and have shared many pivotal musical moments along the way. We spent several years in New York at the same time, where we often met for private jam sessions. Most of the time, we played freely and without prior arrangements, something that came naturally from our familiarity with one another. The open instrumentation — drums, piano and guitar, without bass — also offered plenty of room for creative freedom. Everything fell into place: Keisuke’s guitar playing, with its wide range of electric sound effects, combined with Can’s lyrical acoustic piano sound, all framed by my delicate, constantly weaving drumming. Before long, I began bringing in my own compositions: fragments, sketches, melodies and combinations of sounds that could easily be woven into the free improvisations. Gradually, we developed a sound language of our own.

Towards the end of my time in New York, I decided to book a recording studio to preserve this chapter of my life in a lasting form. We came up with the idea of inviting someone from the New York scene to join us and bring an additional source of inspiration to our playing. Although we were happy with our bass-less lineup, Thomas Morgan immediately came to mind. His understated and highly sensitive approach to playing seemed ideally suited to the band’s sound. And so it happened! The result was my debut album, Little Flower, recorded as a quartet with bass. After returning to Berlin, I organised a release tour, for which Thomas flew over to join us. In the following years, however, logistical considerations meant that we mostly performed in our original bass-less lineup. By now, our trio has taken its name from Little Flower.

The geographical distance between New York and Berlin did not stop us from continuing to perform together. We made the most of every opportunity to be in the same place at the same time. In Berlin, we remembered the old Fender Rhodes at Can’s parents’ house. It is incredibly heavy to transport, but its sound is all the more beautiful. The Rhodes allowed us to further enrich the space between the electric guitar sounds and the acoustic piano. It also enabled us to fill out the lower frequencies more fully. This further expanded our sonic vocabulary. Over the following years, I composed more and more music for the band and began planning a new recording. In the end, it took a little longer than expected: alongside music, we were busy with family life and raising children. In the meantime, the pandemic arrived, and Keisuke also moved back to Berlin. With Silence, we are now releasing our second album.

When I compose, I process life with all its ups and downs. Not consciously, in the sense of a rational process, but on an emotional level. I look for ways to bring notes into relationship with one another and connect different sounds. In the process, a sonic world emerges that gives something back to me, resonating with my personal experiences. It reflects the chaos and unpredictability of life while simultaneously seeking to create calm and harmony. For me, music is therefore both a form of self-expression and a means of helping myself through life. It gives me a sense of grounding in a world that sometimes seems to have lost its bearings — particularly in recent years, with crises and wars seemingly everywhere. The growing polarisation and militarisation of our society concern me. Doubt, nuance and the willingness to see things in shades of grey, along with diplomacy and, more broadly, the things that connect us as human beings, have almost disappeared from public discourse.

With Silence, I seek to reconcile the helplessness and frustration I feel in the face of a fragmented world with my own desire for reconciliation and balance. For me, music is a search for peace, both on a personal level and on a larger scale. It is a quiet refuge in a world that is becoming ever louder and more restless.
