*Secret Life of Button Boxes: Blue Box* is the second installment of a conceptual diptych by Ukrainian sound artist, builder, and improvisor Andy Nechaevsky. Released via the Seattle-based Right Brain Records, the album acts as a subterranean, austere counterweight to its predecessor, built entirely without digital synthesis or computer-generated processing.

At the core of *Blue Box* is Nechaevsky’s proprietary *Modal Palimpsest* methodology—a framework that pairs strict pre-determined scalar boundaries with absolute spontaneous composition. The acoustic architecture relies on non-standard instrumentation and custom engineering: a heavily detuned, muted cello configuration (NotaCello) tuned to an Ab1–C2–F2–G2 matrix for tectonic low-end resonance, and Nechaevsky’s custom 9-tone kalimbas set to non-diatonic modal arrays (Moorish Phrygian, Mi Shebeirach, Freygish). These are augmented by tuned bronze rods, ad-hoc wind objects, and raw analog field recordings.

Mastered with a wide dynamic range, *Blue Box* treats the physical mechanics of performance—key clicks, breath turbulence, and room reflections—as integral harmonic and rhythmic elements. The result is an uncompromising work of non-idiomatic acoustic exploration, bridging the gap between microtonal improvisation, Fourth World textures, and structural sound art.
