Album Description
Plays at the Wrong Time is the latest album from New York-based Japanese flutist, composer, and improviser Haruna Fukazawa. Blending contemporary jazz, straight-ahead swing, blues, and lyrical interpretations of jazz standards, Fukazawa combines classical precision with a bold, joyful improvisational style inspired by her mentor, legendary jazz saxophonist Frank Wess.
Fukazawa leads an accomplished quintet featuring Steve Wilson (soprano saxophone and flute), David DeMotta (piano), Bill Moring (bass), and Steve Johns (drums). The album features original compositions, including “Plays at the Wrong Time,” “Mellow Shadow,” and “Hot & Spicy, Sometimes Sweet,” alongside fresh arrangements of jazz classics such as “When I Fall in Love,” “Let’s Cool One,” “Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most,” and “Fungii Mama.”
