percussionAlbum Description
In 2024, chromatic harmonica player, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Sondre Ferstad premiered his commissioned work Pieces of Wood at the Trondheim Jazz Festival. The work is a tribute to the joy of creating, and during performances the musicians share the stage with an artist who shapes a wooden sculpture in dialogue with the music.
In the spring of 2026, the work was recorded for the album Pieces of Wood. Within an acoustic and melodic soundscape, the musicians are still accompanied by the sounds of artist Tore Reisch carving and chopping wood (primarily on tracks 3, 5, and 7). Lyrics about "Mother Trees" – old trees that nourish younger trees through underground root and fungal networks – run throughout the album as a reflection on how we as a society care for both nature and one another.
"The kind of funeral darkness one can find joy in. (...) It sounds like Norwegian folk music from a county no one has heard of. From a branch of a fjord that cannot be found on any map." - Arild R. Andersen, Jazz i Norge, May 11, 2024
Sondre on the album
"In Pieces of Wood I explore our relationship with nature and one another. Inspired by researcher Suzanne Simard's concept of "Mother Trees", the album draws on how trees in old-growth forests nurture one another through underground mycorrhizal networks in ways that resemble maternal care.
I wanted to give voice to a Mother Tree. Through the lyrics, we follow her struggle to survive, her love for her children, and her hope that the saplings around her will grow strong and tall. And at the heart of the Pieces of Wood-forest stands an artist making something. What is he making? I don’t know, but I find something meaningful in watching him create, slowly and deliberately."
