Album Description

All Jazz lovers are acquainted with performances featuring improvisation based on well-known tunes. While this trait of the art is admirable, it is another challenge to write original Jazz. Not only has Jason Whatley been able to create interesting pieces, he has arranged them to represent a particular sound, capturing the spirit of 50s and 60s era of Miles Davis, Howard McGhee and James Moody. Besides all this, he has assembled a talented group to present his works. On Piano, he leads a quintet comprising Michael Woods (Trumpet and Flugel), Damon Warner (Reeds), Hamish Houston (Bass) and Beau Thomas (Drums). The two front line format leads to nice harmonic work. The rhythm section is tight and allows the solos to flow. The seven original compositions range from Blues to Ballads and all have merit, my favourite being the opening title track Newfound Cool. This is a minor Blues with a very steady groove. The opening theme is stated by Woods on Trumpet, joined by Warner on Tenor Sax for the repeat. Thoughtful solos by Trumpet and Sax lead to impressive piano choruses from Whatley, who ranges over the whole keyboard, maintaining a long entertaining line. The theme returns in harmony and a neat coda by Houston and Thomas on Bass and Drums concludes the track. Mention must be made of the technical prowess of Michael Woods, who also recorded and mixed the disc. All up, a very creditable performance. Cool Jason, cool. Bruce Gourlay
