Album Description

Move Closer! - Branko Arnsek Sextet (59music 2022) The debut album "Move closer!" by the jazz bassist Branko Arnsek, who was born in the former Yugoslavia, is a summary of his many years of musical work. It is the first of many of his recordings that this time also bears his name. To do this, he has gathered young musicians around him who can handle the material, which includes influences from the Balkans to Cuba in a modern jazz guise. Composing has always been one of his strengths and this disc proves it again. In contemporary jazz it is no longer necessary to do without groove and functional harmony in order to create something new. It's more the listener's experience of perhaps having heard it before realizing that it's completely different. In this sense … For example, Arnsek used hip-hop achievements like 5 over 4 by a JDilla in the D'Avinci play. In memory of D'Angelo, by the way. As a connoisseur of Afro-Cuban folklore, rare rhythms such as Makuta or Rumba Obatala also come into play in his pieces. Listen to the title of the same name, Obatala, and you will understand where jazz gets its drive from. Incidentally, he brought a rhythm group into the band for this purpose, consisting of himself on double bass and electric bass, Frank Eberle on piano / electric piano, Michael Mischl on drums and Reinier Ceruto on congas and batas. Just as Sonny Rollins or Ahmad Jamal emphasized the percussive element in their jazz band, Arnsek does this with two musicians who are well versed in Cuban music, Mischl and Ceruto. The percussionist Reinier Ceruto himself is from Habana. Bečanović pays homage to a deceased musician friend and, as the name suggests, to music from the Balkans and Jazz. The two young wind players Anton Mangold on the alto saxophone and Janos Löber on the trumpet are a pleasure to listen to. Both can be heard in Delay and Sirba me da. Speaking of jazz; With this production, the listener will once again realize that jazz is alive! At the latest with the four titles in which the Cuban singer Johana Jo Jones comes into play, the connection between the different musical cultures is sealed. She does not sing in English but in her mother tongue, Spanish. In addition to the Cuban art of improvisation, melismas from the North American R&B genre also meet. She is featured with the tracks Charlie, No sabes, J*A*Z*Z and Balanza. The disc is haptically available as CD (from November 28th, 2022) and vinyl (from January 2022). On all other platforms too, of course. Available from 59music.com or amazon.com etc. URL: https://arnsek.de/en/arnsek.html http://www.59music.com/en/kaufen.html
