Album Description

Serge Rogalski Trio – La Cueva de Goya

La Cueva de Goya is less an album than a sonic expedition. Conceived as a sequence of interconnected chapters, it invites the listener into an imaginary landscape where contemporary jazz, free improvisation, chamber music, and cinematic atmospheres coexist without hierarchy.

Rather than relying on conventional themes and solos, Serge Rogalski builds each piece around texture, timbre, and movement. Prepared guitar, lithophones, extended instrumental techniques, and an intuitive trio interplay create music that constantly shifts between fragile intimacy and explosive collective energy. Composition and improvisation become inseparable, each shaping the other in real time.

The trio—Serge Rogalski on guitar, Gaël Petrina on double bass, and Sam Ospovat on drums and lithophones—shares an exceptional level of communication. No instrument assumes a permanent leading role. Instead, every gesture becomes part of a living conversation where rhythm, resonance, and silence are treated as equal musical materials.

The presence of lithophones is particularly striking. Their mineral resonance expands the trio's palette beyond traditional jazz colors, reinforcing the album's impression of moving through a succession of underground chambers, each with its own acoustic identity. The prepared guitar further blurs the boundary between string instrument, percussion, and sound object.

While traces of free jazz, post-rock, and European improvisation can be heard throughout, La Cueva de Goya resists easy categorization. It is deeply visual music, suggesting shifting landscapes and imaginary narratives without ever becoming programmatic. Every composition unfolds organically, allowing tension, space, and surprise to determine its direction.

Recorded with remarkable clarity by Philippe Labroue, the album preserves the physical presence of the trio while capturing the smallest details of their sonic explorations. The result is an immersive listening experience that rewards both close attention and repeated visits.

La Cueva de Goya is ultimately an exploration of sound itself—a work in which improvisation is not merely a technique but a method of discovery. It is adventurous yet coherent, uncompromising yet inviting, and confirms Serge Rogalski Trio as an ensemble committed to expanding the expressive possibilities of the contemporary jazz trio.
