Album Description

VEJSLEV / BRUNBJERG / ELHØJ iT!s a RioT! (IN THE FLESH RECORD COMPANY, November 14th 2025) Vejslev / Brunbjerg / Elhøj release debut album iT!s a RioT! — a fierce, lyrical, and freewheeling take on the jazz tradition. The release will be celebrated with a concert at Christiania Jazz Club, Copenhagen, on November 21st. Danish trio Vejslev / Brunbjerg / Elhøj are set to release their debut album iT!s a RioT! — a bold, unpredictable collection of jazz standards and spontaneous improvisations, reshaped through years of shared language and restless curiosity. The result is a sound that leans into the unsteady, welcomes risk, and finds joy in the moment of creation. Guitarist Kristoffer Vejslev, bassist Martin Brunbjerg, and drummer Rasmus Elhøj have developed a deep musical connection through countless hours of playing, listening, and pushing each other in rehearsal rooms, on stage, and in the studio. What began as a musical playground has evolved into a trio with a clear but constantly shifting identity — one that balances Nordic restraint with explosive energy, and a playful attitude with real musical intent. There are no original compositions on iT!s a RioT! — instead, the trio breathes new life into the jazz canon with a sense of irreverence, imagination, and trust. The album moves fluidly between fragile balladry, fractured swing, and ferocious free improvisation, always anchored by the trio!s instinctive interplay. Alongside the core trio, the album features three guest musicians with distinct talents — Rudi Mahall, Hannes Bennich, and Simon Toldam — who expand the sonic terrain in unexpected ways. Mahall!s raw, avant-garde phrasing adds warped charm to Monk!s Dream, Ask Me Now, and Well You Needn!t. Bennich plays with lyrical intensity on Lennie!s Pennies and shares the frontline with Mahall on Smog Eyes, Monk!s Dream, and Well You Needn!t, where the two thread through the trio!s punk-infused textures. Toldam appears on Ricochet, We See, and A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing — spontaneous, searching performances where friction becomes form, shaped as much by open space and Nordic minimalism as by tension and release. As the trio writes in the album!s gatefold: "Our approach is one of curiosity, a bit of irreverence, and a deep respect for the energy that first made this music matter. There!s space here for quiet reflection and spacious lyricism, but also for raw noise, sideways humor, and sudden detours. We lean into the unsteady and the unexpected. Sometimes it!s carefully controlled, other times it teeters on the edge of falling apart — but always with trust, attention, and a joy that cannot be faked.” iT!s a RioT! is released on IN THE FLESH RECORD COMPANY and stands as both a statement and a celebration: of friendship, risk, shared instinct — and the thrill of not knowing exactly what comes next.
