Album Description
Inner Play is a deeply intuitive duo recording by percussionist Tom Teasley and trumpeter Dave Ballou. Recorded live in a single session, the music is completely improvised yet unfolds with a strong compositional sensibility, moving seamlessly between lyrical melodies, chamber-jazz textures, world music influences, adventurous soundscapes, and rhythmic dialogue.
Drawing on decades of collaborative experience and a shared commitment to spontaneous creation, Teasley performs on drumset, world percussion, handpan, and electronics, while Ballou's trumpet voice ranges from lyrical and spacious to bold and exploratory. Together they engage in a musical conversation that is intimate, adventurous, and emotionally resonant.
The result is music that rewards close listening while remaining accessible through its warmth, imagination, and sense of discovery. As Bill Milkowski noted, the duo's interplay is "intuitive, telepathic and forward-thinking... spiritually refreshing."
