Album Description

İlk Renk Oud-Contrbass-Percussion This project aims to prove that Ottoman-Turkish music is more than a historic artifact and still carries the potential to establish its own aesthetic standards for the future. The research I have been doing over the years convinced me that one of the most important features of Ottoman-Turkish tradition was its extraordinary ability to renew its forms, as well as its rhythmic and melodic features on the basis of the aesthetic requirements of different eras. Throughout this six century-long musical tradition, having a strict compositional style based on rhythmic forms has probably been the most distinctive feature which placed the Ottoman-Turkish variant to a unique position among the musical traditions of the Near East. In İlk Renk, the main musical element is rhythm. Many musicologists agree that Ottoman-Turkish composers considered rhythmic forms to be blueprints and composed over a chosen rhythmic form. Even though Ottoman- Turkish music is at the very core of this album, one can easily hear the mainly ornamental influences of Western classical and jazz music, too. I intentionally avoided using harmony, as I believe that what contemporary Ottoman- Turkish music needs is an in-depth reinterpretation of the concepts of its own language on the basis of today’s aesthetic values, rather than straight forward adaptations into Western classical or Jazz harmonic settings. My purpose in İlk Renk is to present a fresh new perspective in Ottoman-Turkish music while being faithful to its historical roots
