Album Description

Gabe Katell’s debut recording “Hear, It is” released on 10/17/2025, featuring top Los Angeles musicians performing engaging and varied jazz standards. The title is a play on words with two meanings: “Here it is” and “Listen, it is here”.  At the time, he came up with this title, Gabe didn’t realize that, subconsciously, it may have been inspired by the first release of the musician who influenced him the most, baritone saxophonist Nick Brignola (his 1967 recording “This is It!”). Pianist Adam Hersh’s clever arrangements refresh the compositions of Horace Silver, Burke/Van Heusen and Cedar Walton. “Hear, It is” is a distinctive addition to the jazz canon because few jazz albums place the baritone saxophone at the forefront. Fewer still highlight both the baritone sax and flute.  One exception is the great saxophonist Cecil Payne’s “Bird Gets the Worm” recording. On one track, Sam Jones’ blues “Unit 7,” Gabe plays harmony parts on yet another woodwind, the clarinet.
