Album Description
The origins of this musical project go back to my childhood. First in the games that I played with my friends, and then, when we watched certain movies, I always felt the wish, sometimes in secret, to be on the Native Americans’ side.
Little by little, I understood that reality was very different from those movies, and became aware of the tragedy, the massacre, the genocide… my fascination took on another dimension and understanding, and I developed a deep respect for the great Indian Nations.
Later on, when I became a father, I would hold my children on my lap pretending to be a great chief of an imaginary tribe, making up little songs which repeated invariably in low bass notes, and they loved those repetitive sounds and rhythms.
Today, these songs or melodies have taken on another form and structure, and some of them are part of this new project “Gathering”.
The image that I chose for the album is this magnificent photo by Edward S. Curtis, of three Cheyenne warriors mounted on their horses. I don´t know what they see… to me, in their gaze is contained a past, a present, and a future that belongs to them only, and that I can only imagine.
It was in this imagined gaze that my group of compositions began to take shape.
This album is dedicated to the Native American People, and to Edward S. Curtis as well as the anonymous photographers that, through the richness of their photos, helped preserve the legacy of Native American Culture.
