Album Description

20th-anniversary recording by the groundbreaking Afro-Peruvian Sextet, led by trumpeter/composer Gabriel Alegria. Original material by Alegria & saxophonist Laura Andrea Leguia, plus innovative arrangements of "Giant Steps" & Sting's "Walking on the Moon." Album title "El Moki" derives from an elf-like creature that is said to protect miners in the mountains of Peru. The title track of the album, says Gabriel, "refers not to elves in mines but to the role of musicians in society. We embody El Muki, standing as the protectors of humanity against the designs of a technologically driven world. Afro-Peruvian jazz music safeguards the sacred exchange of true musical energy between cultures, an essence that can never be replicated by machine."
