Album Description
[from the liner notes]...Not only was Morton innovative as a pianist, but he was also an innovative composer. He liked to say he was the “Inventor of Jazz” to as many people as would listen, a dubious claim that we will never be able to prove…or disprove. One thing is fairly certain: He was the first to write down his compositions and to make “specialized” arrangements for his band. The Red Hot Peppers recordings of the mid-1920s are some of the most exciting and important in the early jazz canon. Although he was largely “out of style” by the 1930s, his influence persisted. “King Porter Stomp” lived on through the big band era and was performed by great bands such as Fletcher Henderson, Harry James, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller. His innovative piano style pervaded the playing of more recent New Orleans pianists such as James Booker, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, and Harry Connick Jr.
This album comes from a place of great love, admiration, and respect for not only “Jelly Roll” Morton himself, but the entire early jazz genre. It is my hope that these recordings offer a fresh and enjoyable tribute to one of the great pioneers of American jazz music, and one of my musical heroes. I hope you have as much fun listening to this album as Jamie Shannon, the band, and I did making it. - Dr. Warren Ertle
