Golem Overture 10:13 about “Distant Places” reflects the many influences found in my music (often involving different cultures) as well as personal experiences. The album is as much about the diverse influences that inform my writing as it is about the various places, people, and things I’ve encountered (especially in earlier years). In a work such as Rochester Suite, I sought to represent the places and landmarks from my college days along with the emotional energy associated with each. Beyond that, all of the compositions on this album support a diverse, yet balanced flow—including contrasting rhythms, timbres, instrumentation, and colors. In fact, each piece can be seen to reflect a literal color, which I leave up to the listener to interpret. There’s also a musical arc to this album, which comes from my admiration of the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album and its musical flow. Similar to Sgt. Pepper, there’s an introductory piece (making a strong statement) followed by a palette of sonic colors and unique stories, leading to a dramatic conclusion. Distant Places is my version of this musical journey....I hope you enjoy the show!
