Album Description

The Dan Neville Nonet focuses a brilliant jazz lens on folkloric Afro- Colombian music from the country’s little-known Pacific Coast

Dan Neville introduced North American audiences to the enthralling music of Colombia’s Pacific Coast on 2022’s critically hailed La Voz del Mar, an album featuring the stunning Afro-Colombian vocalist Xiomara Torres. With two new video tracks by his nine-piece New York ensemble the vibraphonist and marimba player has added a whole new perspective to a largely overlooked but extraordinarily rich trove of Afro-Colombian rhythms.

Released on YouTube on Jan. 30, 2026, “Rhythms of Respiration” is a Neville original inspired by his immersion in Afro-Colombian music and studies with the late maestro Diego Obregón, a multi-instrumentalist and instrument builder from Colombia’s Pacific coastal town of Guapi. Recorded live, the intricately orchestrated piece features Neville on vibes with a stellar cast of players, including drum great Ari Hoenig, a prolific recording artist under his own name and as an accompanist for piano greats Kenny Werner, Jean-Michel Pilc and Tigran Hamasyan.

“Barrio Cascada,” slated for release via YouTube on February 20, 2026, features Xiomara Torres as a special guest with the nonet. With Neville on marimba, it’s a traditional incantatory piece punctuated by Torres on the traditional shaker-like guasá. The lapidary arrangement deploys the four horns in call and response cadences riding a tidal surge of percussion.

Made possible with support from a 2025 Fellowship Grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the nonet pieces offer a preview of one of the most exciting new groups on the New York scene.

For Neville, traveling to Colombia to study with masters on the Pacific Coast opened up a vast new realm. “I learned so much more about the folklore, and the values that have been passed down from the masters, keeping community strong,” he says. “Musically I love the three- dimensional effect. You have all these interesting textures.”

On a scene that’s been enriched by a century of interaction with African diasporic rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, Peru, Puerto Rico and beyond, Neville is connecting New York to a tradition that should be far better known.

"Dan Neville is a dynamic and innovative vibraphonist, recognized for his expressive sound, advanced technique, and ability to unite musical traditions through a forward-looking artistic approach. With his nonet, he now offers a preview of one of the most exciting ensembles on the New York scene, building a bridge between jazz and an Afro-Colombian tradition that deserves to be far more widely known." - Solar Latin Club (Colombia 2026)
