oudAlbum Description
Middle Eastern tones and Nordic sounds come together on this new album from the Danish-Palestinian oud player Bilal Irshed and the Danish pianist Lars Fiil. Both musicians have individually made a strong mark on the Danish and international music scene in recent years. Bilal Irshed, through his work with, among others, Bilal Irshed Trio, The Fifth String Ensemble and The Middle East Peace Ensemble, has established himself as an original interpreter of Middle Eastern music. Lars Fiil, through his releases with Frit Fald, Fiil Free, and I Think You’re Awesome, has created a jazz language with a distinctly Nordic tone. The meeting of Middle Eastern music and Nordic jazz is precisely at the center of the album, which consists of original compositions, an Arabic pop song, and a Danish hymn. Drones, quarter tones, extended harmonies, and free improvisations are all part of the palette when these two musicians with very different backgrounds come together in their shared love for the good melody and a strong passion for creating connections and bridging diverse musical and cultural worlds. To further emphasize the value of forming new connections, they have invited cellist Soma Allpass to join them on four of the album's tracks. Her background in both classical and improvised music adds another layer to the intimate interplay that unfolds throughout the album. "Connections" is a new approach to music that explores, connects, and celebrates diversity and differences through open and attentive collaboration.
