ABC Jazz is proud to present the debut full-length album recording from contemporary jazz vocalist and composer Natalie Dietz. Originally from Sydney and now resident in New York, Dietz has attracted attention in both the Australia and international jazz scenes, impressing audiences and critics alike with her ethereal vocal tone and strikingly original approach as a jazz composer and artist, seamlessly blending complex harmonies with pure, lyrical melodies. Her album Casualty is an exploration of the beauty in emotional vulnerability, juxtaposed with hope and possibility. From the title track, which embraces our fragility while acknowledging its dangers, through to the gentle melancholy of ‘Snowfall’, Dietz takes us on a journey through an emotional landscape rich in nuance, with seven original songs full of vivid musical imagery. Along the way, Dietz also offers her own distinctive interpretations of jazz standards ‘Pure Imagination’ and ‘Midnight Sun’, as well as an arrangement of the classic crooning balled ‘Oceano’, by Brazilian songwriter Djavan, plus her own lyrics to the Dave Holland original ‘Ario’. Since relocating to the US, where she won an ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award in 2016, she has performed in New York City at Club Bonafide, Shapeshifter Lab, Pianos, Rockwood Music Hall and Manhattan’s Flatiron Room, and in Boston at venues including New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, Lilypad and the Beehive.
