guitarAlbum Description
Cabaku a word my son Mateo invented when he was three years old. He liked giving new names to everything, and one day, he pointed to the sky and named it “cabaku.” For me, it was special to see how a child could name something sacred. This album is a reflection of my inner world. If you look at the titles of the songs, each one reflects the state of my inner life, what I was experiencing at the time, and my spirituality. I actually don’t talk about this much: I’m Christian, but for me, it’s an intimate experience, and I don’t go through life trying to convince people to believe the same as I do. The way I’ve found to speak about my spirituality is through music. “Jericho,” one of the first songs I wrote, comes from the Bible: the people of Israel spent 40 years in the desert until God told them they could take the Promised Land. The first place they settled was Jericho, but for that, God gave them instructions: they had to walk around the city’s wall seven times, once each day of the week. They went with drums, chants, and horns, and in the end, on the seventh round, everyone had to sing. When they did, every wall came down. To me, the story of Jericho is about that: one day, your blindness falls away and you can see everything more clearly. That blindness can be a psychological or emotional barrier. In my case, it’s a song that expresses how many deep barriers from the past came down.
