https://johanssonrylanderlove.bandcamp.com Fine-veined Crinkle Weed, Wentletrap and The Two Lipped Door Snail are some of the poetically resonating titles on the pianist Karin Johansson and saxophonist Lisen Rylander Löve’s new album Arter (Species). The song titles are also names of plants and animals from the SLU Artdatabanken’s red list of threatened species. The reality that many species disappear completely from our planet yearly is what the duo shines a light on with their new album. We all play a part in nature's ingenious and beautiful design, dependent and independent of each other. All together, a symphonic diversity we want to protect in nature as well as in music. The titles on the record, that tickle our audiovisual imagination with their dreamy and jagged contours, naturally open the door to nine brilliantly focused and skillfully precise improvisations. Intimate and zoomed in cut-outs to examine in detail, where piano and saxophone are mixed together with prepared piano and electronically processed sounds. It is a dive into an underbrush of wondrous tones where the musicians unique voices are twined together in a bright, singular music with a wide melodic spectrum and destilled textures. Karin Johansson and Lisen Rylander Löve are sound specialists. It is their profession. They have spent decades refining their tools and exceptional expressions. They are both internationally acclaimed musicians and composers, with careers that are defined by versatile and innovative projects in jazz and experimental music as well as multidisciplinary performances with theatre, dance and visual arts. After spending several years moving parallelly within the same musical rooms, they started examining each other's musical tone and language. They were immediately struck by how organically and strangely beautifully Karin’s prepared piano blended with Lisen’s electronic soundscapes. A longing to record soon grew out of the inspired collaboration. Arter is recorded during one day at Elementstudion in Gothenburg, released on LP, CD and digitally on September 11th, 2020. The music is completely improvised. Karin Johansson - piano / prepared piano / kalimba, can also be heard with her group ORD; in trio with Nina de Heney and Henrik Wartel; duo with Finn Loxbo and with Jonny Wartel 4. Lisen Rylander Löve - tenor saxophone / voice / kalimba / percussion / live electronics, recently released her first album under her own name and can be heard with the jazz quartets The Splendor and Here’s To Us. She is also known for her work with the electronic group Midaircondo. /Press release: Erika Angell, musician and composer.
