The Scornful Four started out as a Chet Baker/Gerry Mulligan Quartet rip-off/tribute with Garton on baritone saxophone, but he has made the switch to alto with revered reference to the enigmatic beauty and undeniably Australian rasp of Bernie McGann, as well as the often chord-less ensembles of Ornette Coleman. The classic jazz hero-worship continues with nods to the legendary pianoless groups of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane’s fiery 1960s ensembles, the intensity of Mark Simmonds and Scott Tinkler, and the genre- breaking excursions of Sandy Evans. The new single ‘40’ was written as a tribute to Nina Simone and takes specific inspiration from her performances of ‘Sinnerman’ and ‘Mississippi Goddamn’. The b-side ‘jazzzz…’ was intended as a bit of tongue-in-cheek, but Garton considers it to be a teaser for the vibe of the forthcoming debut LP. These tracks were recorded live in one room with four microphones by Garton himself, using the wonderful space at Alchemix Studios.
