Bushman's Revenge: Ah, Les Vaches
Track review of "One Small Misstep For Man, One Giant Mistake For Mankind""One Small Misstep For Man, One Giant Mistake For Mankind," from Ah, Les Vaches, is ominous almost from the outset. The trio works patiently, allowing tension to accumulate rather than rushing toward the inevitable explosion. Hermansen's guitar hangs over the rhythm section in dark, probing lines while Kreken and Nilssen maintain a heavy, deliberate pulse underneath. Subtle shifts in dynamics become tantalizing buildups, and ascending progressions steadily increase the pressure.
That restraint is temporary. Hermansen gradually pushes outward, his guitar becoming more abrasive and insistent as the trio tightens the screws. The music rises in waves rather than following a conventional solo-and-accompaniment design, each surge pointing toward something larger. By the closing stretch, the careful construction finally gives way: guitar, bass and drums blow the framework wide open in a turbulent release. It's classic Bushman's Revengemenacing, patiently engineered and always threatening to come apart at the seams.
