Roberto Occhipinti: A Bend in the River

Quarto album nelle vesti di leader per Roberto Occhipinti. Il bassista e compositore, nato in Canada da genitori siciliani, nel suo percorso artistico si è immerso più volte nella musica afrocubana, e questo A Bend in the River - per determinati aspetti - non fa eccezione, anche se nelle sette tracce qui proposte si possono evidenziare altre chiavi di lettura.

A cominciare dall'utilizzo degli archi, capaci di creare introduzioni suggestive e sfondi timbricamente molto morbidi, sui quali si muove a piacimento un quartetto ritmicamente flessibile, ma anche incisivo dal punto di vista dell'espressività complessiva. Questo perché alla corte di Occhipinti agisce il saxofonista Luis Deniz - che firma la conclusiva "Marta" -, al quale viene affidato il ruolo di figura primaria, in un gioco compositivo fatto di incastri, sfumature e intuizioni di varia natura.

Si rintracciano molecole di musica centroamericana nel substrato ritmico di A Bend in the River, ma l'album mostra il suo lato migliore nell'eleganza degli arrangiamenti e nella sobrietà con la quale Occhipinti approccia un evergreen come "Naima," unico momento in cui abbandona il ruolo di retroguardia per far risaltare le corde del suo strumento.
